In Santa Fe studio, very step of the artistic process is imbued with a reverence for Nature, beginning with his search in the wilds for materials. While walking the natural landscapes of the Southwest, Richard made a "magical find," the fragile beauty of the seed heads of the goat’s beard plant. To capture that beauty, he collects the goat’s beard as buds and places them in water until they’re ready to be inserted into the orb. There are about 15 steps in making the orb. When finally the bud opens inside the orb, 60 to 80 individually aligned seeds create magical beauty, an endless kaleidoscope.
Richard’s Seed Orbs, of course, require an "orb of glass" to display and protect the otherworldly beauty. For this, Richard "stays local" with Roswell, NM's Christmas by Krebs Company, the only domestic glass ornament company remaining in the US, and committed to being an environmentally responsible business.
