And, when Elegant Roots needed a partner to create high-quality puzzles from the wonderful Paul Morse photographs of the 2009 Obama Inauguration, Ceremony and Parade, we thought only of Wentworth.

The Beginning

Jigsaw puzzles were invented in 1760 by John Spilsbury. He pasted maps onto thin sheets of wood, and cut around the country borders with a fret saw. By the late-1800s, traditional hand-crafted wooden puzzles sported intricate cut designs with no two pieces alike and delighted with the specially shaped whimsies. But, with the advent of cardboard puzzles and mass production, these traditional charms all but disappeared.

Over 15 years ago, Kevin Wentworth Preston founded the Wentworth Wooden Jigsaw Company under the inspiration to recreate the golden age with uniquely intricate, high quality wooden jigsaw puzzles, affordable yet premium quality. Wentworth brought back the whimsy and, true to Victorian style, no two pieces are alike.

Since then Wentworth Puzzles have captivated an ever growing number of jigsaw lovers and discerning gift buyers around the world. Once you have tried a Wentworth Wooden Puzzle, no ordinary puzzle will do!

The Heart

Wentworth is still run from its small factory on the edge of the Cotswolds in England. With a strong family-run feel and passion for all things puzzling, Wentworth makes every puzzle with loving attention to detail. Every member of the staff plays a critical role in producing high quality puzzles -- from the design team creating unique cut patterns to the folks boarding the image by hand to the individual packing.

And Wentworth’s puzzles are made with the environment in mind. All Wentworth puzzles are produced using wooden board that is sustainably sourced from Forest Stewardship Council-managed forests. Producing a wooden gift as environmentally friendly as it can be is of paramount importance to Wentworth – not only in the puzzles but in the company’s policies – from using energy efficient light bulbs to making sure machines are turned off when not in use.

The Highlights

Wentworth’s commitment goes beyond their high-quality puzzles, concern for the environment and the family-run feel of their operations. Wentworth shows its commitment to community through supporting fund-raising for the Great Ormond Street Hospital by donating puzzles to a fantastic event called “Christmas at St. Pancras”.

And Wentworth walked away with Gold AND Silver at the Good Toy Awards 2008!
